Chapter 10

 

As everyone knows, YouTube is one of the biggest platforms for video and I am also a big fan of YouTube. I personally tend to spend lot of time watching YouTube against my will especially in the late night. Recently, I often watch YouTube short video and have a good time. Speaking of short video, I think many people imagine TikTok first, but YouTube is getting popular and popular. YouTube introduced short video recently after the trend of TikTok. Nowadays, some social media such as Instagram and Snapchat have short videos, too. So, the market is getting competitive, but I believe the popularity of YouTube short is going to grow.

The thing I was surprised at after reading the textbook is that YouTube is the second largest search engine and second most popular website in the world after Google. Since Google acquired YouTube in 2006, technically only one company have top two search engine and popularity, which is amazing.

In terms of business, there are lots of advertisement in videos. And I feel the number of ads per video is getting more and also longer. They also encourage us to join YouTube Premium. This is a good strategy for YouTube. However, from a position that I used to be a subscription of Premium, I felt both pros and cons. For pros, you can watch the video without any ads and you can play videos even the state of background. On the other hand, however, YouTube Music was bad. You can use YouTube Music for free without any restrictions if you subscribe to YouTube Premium. The problem is probably they do not have all the song that you want to listen to, and some of the songs lack of their lyrics. That is why I stop using YouTube Premium.

As I mentioned above, although there are some aspects in YouTube, I totally like it and hopefully it will keep helping enjoy part of my life.

  Speaking of social media which provide you with shot videos, most people would imagine TikTok. I think the popularity of TikTok enabled another social media to introduce short videos. However, TikTok is still one of the most popular media for short videos all over the world. I do not watch TikTok recently, but I used to get into TikTok when I was a high school student. It is a good tool because they showed me videos based on my preference. Also, I barely get bored of watching videos because every video is short. Another thing that I like about TikTok is we can know the trends. It can be music, fashion, worldwide and so on. Chapter1 of the textbook

I have my doubts about the statement that 67% of the world’s population uses mobile devices. I felt doubtful because this percentage was very high. There are a lot of children and older people all over the world. Basically, I think too young people and too old people tend not to use their phone. In addition to this, there are many poor people including those who live below the poverty line. Given these two things, I would like to say that the actual percentage should be lower than the statement in the textbook. That statement might exclude such kinds of people though. By the way, I looked at the screen time of my smartphone. I spent 6 hours for the use of phone on daily average last week. While the average worldwide is 2 hours and 29 min, mine was 3 hours 5 min per day. I often tend to spend more time on social media such as Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and so on.
